Cutting out alcohol to lose weight

Today, I was talking to someone who wants to lose 5 lbs in the next month or two. She eats pretty much whatever she wants but has 5 large glasses of wine in a regular night. I did the math and discovered that a regular glass of white wine has around 100 calories in it. Hers are large glasses, so they have even more. If she were to cut down to 2 glasses a night, she would be eliminating 350 or so calories a day from her diet! There are 3500 calories in a pound of fat, so in 10 days she would lose a pound, without diet or exercise. While one drink a day is actually correlated with being leaner, infrequent but heavy drinking (5-7 drinks in one day, once a week) is actually a contributor to obesity. Obviously, mixed drinks are much worse than wine. The sugar and other added ingredients do no favors for your waistline. So think before you pour another glass!
